Conversations starters: Managing stress or difficult situations at work

You understand the benefits of reaching out to a mentor; nevertheless, when it’s time to take action, you’re unsure of how to make first contact with someone on Élo. To make your life easier, we’ve put together a few examples of conversation starters.

Feel free to adapt these to your goals and needs! Also, you’re welcome to try out our message generator to start a conversation that aligns perfectly with your situation.

1) Better manage your stress during presentations

"Good evening Mr. Nguyen,

I’ve been a consultant at a marketing agency for two years. I adore my team, the dynamic yet relaxed office atmosphere, and the fact that I’m exercising my creative faculties almost every day. As I’m sure you know, long hours are often required to meet deadlines, but I don’t mind! In short, I love what I do. However, after two years in my position, I am still very anxious when it comes to pitching proposals to clients. My stress before and after presentations makes me feel as though I’m losing face with my superiors…

I’ve considered asking my boss to change positions, but truly, I’m not sure what else I want to do. Do you have any tips for overcoming stress?

Thanks in advance."

2) Returning to work after maternity leave

"Hello Diana,

I am writing because even though we do not work in the same field, you mention in your profile that you are the mother of four children—my question relates more to this than our respective industries.

I have just returned to work after a year of maternity leave with my wonderful twins. During the last weeks of my leave, I was stressed about going back, specifically due to scheduling and time management. However, things have been going surprisingly well thus far; everyone, including the CEO, has been very accommodating.

But this willingness to accommodate is, in fact, kind of the problem. Even though I hold the same title as before (Business Development Manager), I feel like less of an asset to the company and less influential when it comes to decision making. I know my colleagues have good intentions and want me to do well, but I'm just not comfortable with this new dynamic. I’m not sure how to approach the subject without looking ungrateful...

Have you ever experienced such a situation? Do you think I should talk to the president directly?"
