Conversations starters: Start an entrepreneurial project

You understand the benefits of reaching out to a mentor; nevertheless, when it’s time to take action, you’re unsure of how to make first contact with someone on Élo. To make your life easier, we’ve put together a few examples of conversation starters.

Feel free to adapt these to your goals and needs! Also, you’re welcome to try out our message generator to start a conversation that aligns perfectly with your situation.

1) Find a mentor for entrepreneurial advice

"Hello Andrew,

I am currently enrolled in the Rémi-Marcoux entrepreneurial program at HEC and I love it! I previously studied marketing and management, and although I did not have entrepreneurship in mind when I began my studies, it currently seems like an ideal path for me. I already have a business idea in mind (a reservation and healthcare management application) and two associates, one of whom is currently studying with me. However, I feel the need to reach out to an experienced entrepreneur for guidance on issues such as allocation of shares, sharing of responsibilities, rounds of funding, etc.

I have a lot of questions and was hoping, after getting the ball rolling here, we could eventually sit down for a cup of coffee or arrange a call."

2) Transforming a hobby or passion into an entrepreneurial project

"Hello Mrs. Fahrni,

I came across your profile after searching the keyword "photography." I see that you have a career trajectory similar to mine. Like you, I studied to become a psychologist. I was drawn to the field not only because it fascinates me but also because it provides me with the scheduling freedom I need to pursue my other passion: photography.

Over the last few months, I’ve come to realise this latter passion intrigues me the most. And even though the work of a photographer may not pay as much as that of a psychologist, I feel as though I could manage a comfortable living doing what I love most. I already have a few paying clients and a large network thanks to regular wedding gigs and the like.

Nevertheless, I hesitate to take the leap—partly because of my devotion to those consulting with me for months (and even years) but also, admittedly, for fear of making the wrong financial decision.

What was the transition like for you?"
